Hunter Ed

Hunter Education is required for all hunting licenses, including bowhunting. This course covers firearms safety, hunting techniques and responsible, ethical hunting practices. TCSA acts only as the host for these classes and is not responsible for registering participants.

The Tioga County Sportsmen's Association (TCSA) hosted six basic firearm Hunter Education classes during 2019. The classes are conducted by a group of volunteer instructors at the Tioga Sportsmen's Club facilities on Carmichael Hill Road in Owego, NY. We appreciate the use of the facilities, and the instructors who give their time for the classes.

Attention: Hunter Education Instructors Needed

If you are a licensed hunter in New York State, at some time in your past volunteer instructors taught your hunter education class so that you could obtain your hunter education certificate and hunting license. Why not give back now and become a hunter education instructor? If you are interested in becoming an instructor, contact Ashley Meyers at the NYDEC in Cortland, at 753-3095 ext 242 or locally, Dick Mider at 642-8419.

NOTE All courses require the completion of homework prior to attending the course. Participants must also pass a written test at the completion of the course.

TO REGISTER FOR A CLASS - Go to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) website (www.dec.ny.gov). Follow the links below on the DEC website to assist in the registration.

  • At the bottom of the DEC Home page under the Services section, select the link to the Education page.
  • On the left side of the Education page, choose the option for Classes and Training.
  • Choose the link for the Sportsmens Education/Hunter Safety Classes program. It is a good idea to review the requirement for the Hunter Safety classes listed on this page. Tioga County is in Region 7 for Central New York.
  • Mid-way down the page under Course Details, click on the icon for the Hunter Education classes.
  • Choose the link to Register For A Hunter Education Course by inserting the zip code for the location where you want to attend the class. The zip code for Owego is 13827.

If a course at TCSA has been listed for Owego, it will be on the same page where the Zip Code was entered. These classes will typically be posted on the DEC website approximately 30 days before the class date. Registration for classes is not available until approximately 30 days before the class. It is suggested that participants register as soon as possible as the classes fill up within one or two days after registration opens.
